Why 2 different media?
The use of 2 different media allows for an evaluation process
called Drop Out Plating. The Coliscan® media drops
out many general bacteria including Aeromonas and Salmonella with
the target of the recovery being total Coliform Bacteria: color
coded growth of E.coli being blue, other Coliform Bacteria pink.
The Total Number (TN) of Coliform, including E.coli, should be
counted as 1 organism: one Coliform bacteria for enumeration purposes.
The count of the ECA Check ® culture will be the higher count
culture. Subtract the Coliform count from the ECA Check ®
culture count and you can approximate the count of Aeromonas and
Salmonella in your sample.
The Coliscan and ECA Check ® media should be refrigerated or frozen if not used within 24 hours.
